I use the same format in storytime, but alter the materials and activities based on the age group. I work with children ages 0 to 5 years, so the age gap is wide! Below is the format for my storytime:
- 3 opening songs
- 2 to 4 books, depending on the age
- 8 to 10 songs and fingerplays
- Activity
Activities include:
- Scarf play
- Rhythm sticks
- Shaker eggs
- Bean bags
- Bubble machine
- Freeze dance
- Bean bag toss
I usually reserve the scarves and shaker eggs for the toddlers, but I use them regularly with the preschool age group as well! We have a lot of fun songs that older kids really enjoy. After the program I like the kids to make a craft or color and socialize. I usually do not provide a detailed craft for the toddlers, since they are young and really enjoy the interaction with their peers. If I do a craft, it is simple gluing and coloring. They love glue sticks!
On my blog you'll find songs that I use in the storytime. I usually only list the songs that go along with the theme, since I use many in a program.
